Visiting Rhode Island

Beaches, shopping and festivities – summer awaits in Rhode Island. Spend sunny days in cities like Newport, Warwick, and the mighty Providence. Stop by the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free admittance for children. Stick around for the Newport Folk festival happening July 30th and 31st at the Fort Adams State Park headlined by the Decemberists and Elvis Costello. Slap on the sunscreen and choose from freshwater and salt-water beaches in Warwick, an ideal summer city set on Greenwich Bay. Head to Providence and browse through all there is to offer at Providence Place Mall set in downtown P-town. It’s easy to find summer fun in Rhode Island.

Set 30 miles south of Providence, Newport is a historic port city full of tours, museums and outdoor recreation. Get your walk on with a few tours of legendary Newport Mansions, or trek down the popular Newport Cliff Walk nearly four-mile path labeled as a National Recreation Trail. Tennis lovers, this town is for you. Visit the International Tennis Hall of Fame in the National Historic Landmark District for a detailed peek at the history of tennis and famed players. Fans of the game may catch the museum’s benefit jazz concert headlined by songwriter Keb’ Mo’ on July 10th at the Newport Yachting Center. Wrap up your day with a drink at the White Horse Tavern, constructed in the late 17th century, and found less than two miles from the Best Western hotel in Newport.

A 40-minute drive from Newport is the town of Warwick – the second largest city in the Rhode Island. Warwick plays host to historical sites, great restaurants and, most importantly for your summer getaway, beautiful beaches. Pack up the family for an afternoon at Oakland Beach – a salt-water fun zone set off Oakland Beach Avenue. Set yourself up for great photo opportunities at Conimicut Point, a park and salt-water beach adjacent to the Conimicut Lighthouse. Find one-stop fun at Warwick City Park, a 126-acre gathering of playgrounds, hiking and biking path and spacious beach. Dry off at the Best Western hotel in Warwick, or take the 20-mile trek to the town of West Greenwich.

West Greenwich acts as a gateway to the humming city of Providence, a cultural metropolis bursting with universities, corporations, museums and family-friendly attractions. Looking to get out of the heat? Stroll through Nordstrom, the Apple Store or Tiffany & Co. in downtown’s Providence Place Mall. See what’s playing at the National Amusements IMAX Theatre, or grab a drink and a game of skee ball at Dave & Buster’s. Unload your shopping at the Best Western hotel in West Greenwich, and set out for more summer adventure in Rhode Island.
