Visiting Rhode Island
Communities across Rhode Island are ready to welcome visitors with plenty of things to see and do, and plenty of ways to make the most of the state’s summer season.
Warwick is called “the Retail Capital of Rhode Island” and, as the home of T. F. Green Airport, it’s also the first impression many people get of the Providence metropolitan area. Turn any Providence visit into a vacation by shopping to your heart’s content at major shopping centers like Warwick Mall, which also hosts frequent special events and performances, or at a range of shops and boutiques as you head north into Cranston toward Providence.
Families traveling with kids this summer won’t want to miss Warwick’s National Night Out 2016 at Oakland Beach, which looks out onto the waters of Greenwich Bay. The event serves as a way to familiarize residents and visitors with local law enforcement and firefighters, but the festivities include food, face painting, and fireworks.
Providence is the capital city of Rhode Island, serving as the state’s urban and cultural hub. Get a sense of that unique culture at this summer’s Waterfire events, held on both August 9th and August 23rd. Centered around an artistic installation of nearly 100 bonfires on three waterways passing through downtown Providence, the award-winning spectacle has drawn over ten million visitors over the years. Stroll through Waterplace Park to enjoy live music and entertainment as the scent of the aromatic wood smoke perfumes the air around you.
To the south, on the other side of the water, the community of Newport celebrates summertime with the sound of music. Fort Adams State Park fills with fans of folk music, July 25th through 27th, for the 2016 Newport Folk Festival.
Then, the very next weekend, the 2016 Newport Jazz Festival comes to Fort Adams State Park for its 60th anniversary installment. Big-name artists headline the event the event and festivities include food and arts and crafts vendors.
